Edwin Isaacson Whiting was born at the Meadows, eight miles north of St Johns, Arizona. He is the oldest of nine children of Edwin Marion and Anna Maria Isaacson Whiting. When he was six years old his parents moved back to Mapleton, Utah, where they resided until Edwin was nineteen years old.
He received his education in the schools of Mapleton, and in his late teens attended Brigham Young University for one year.
He worked with his father in their sawmill. He was permitted to drag logs from the mountains when only eight years old, and ran a saw in the mill when he was eleven. At the age of seventeen he joined his brother Ernest in the business if peddling fruits and vegetables in the mining towns of Utah. This was a very successful venture for them.
Edwin filled a mission for the LDS Church from 1904 to 1906, in the state of Georgia. He was called to this position at a time of great unrest and bitterness toward the church. Many times his life was threatened by hostile mobs, and saved by the power of The Lord.
When he returned to St Johns in 1906 he was called to the bishopric, as counselor to Ephraim Overson.
He was married to Ethel Farr in the Salt Lake Temple on June 6, 1906.They moved to Hunt, Arizona, where they farmed. The first year of their marriage they saved over one thousand dollars, being extremely frugal and hard working. They farmed for four years, then returned to St Johns, purchased the Cash Store from his father, and have continued in business here since that time. The added a Ford Garage several years later, worked in the sawmill business, and was road contractor building roads and bridges.
He had lumber mills in Arizona and New Mexico, service stations located in those two states, ranches and cattle. At one time he made this statement: "I wish father, who traveled the rough roads over the Buckskin Mountains of the Kaibab Forest, could have lived to see this fine timber taken to market on our big diesel trucks. Father used to look at this beautiful timber as he drove his teams along the road, and express his hope that sometime folks could have the use of it. Now we haul enough lumber out every day to build fifteen homes, and I wish Father could have enjoyed seeing this accomplished."
He has been an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all his life. He has a deep religious faith, and has held many positions in the Church. He has worked in the Sunday School as teacher and Superintendent, Stake Superintendent of MIA, was bishop of St Johns Ward for six years, in the Stake Presidency for 16 years. During his years in the Stake Presidency he especially enjoyed his work with the welfare. He did an outstanding job, and many things he initiated in this stake were copied throughout the church.
He has played an important part in the development and growth of his town and state. He was active in civic affairs, being a member of the local Chamber of Commerce, and Better Roads Association for many years. He served on the board of Supervisors, and two terms as State Senator.
