Martha Whiting Brown Berry
I was born 19«sup»th«/sup» Nov 1886 at St Johns, Arizona, the third child or my parents, Edwin Marion and Maria Isaacson Whiting. When I was two years old we moved back to Mapleton Utah where my fathers people lived. Our home was by grandma Mary Cox Whiting. It was such a joy to live near her. Soon my parents were very busy. They had a fine apiary, 300 hives of bees, and they also had a sawmill where we went to live summers. Later we built a new brick home and had a small store.
My father was near death with typhoid fever when his father came to him in a vision and told him to move back to Arizona. Soon everything was sold and my parents with 8 children moved to St Johns, where Arthur was born. We soon met fine and good people and forgot how we grieved to leave Utah. We found good companions.
I was married to Francis Wiley Brown Oct 3 1906. We lived in St Johns a year then moved to Fort Apache where we managed Shusters store. We had one baby girl, Nora. In about a year my husband was called on a mission to England. My son, Ray, was born 2 months after he left. He returned in 1911 and a year later we moved to Chicago where he studied medicine. He practiced with much success for nearly thirty years in Arizona and Utah, and made many friends. We both worked in the church where ever we lived. He held many offices from Deacon President to Mission President in Central States. I worked in all womens organizations, Primary, Mia and Relief Society. I served as both ward presidents in two wards and stake president in the Relief Society. I was a mission Mother while we served in the mission field from 1947 to 1951.
We are the parents of six living children, 48 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren. Our daughter Nora died of hepatitis in April 1913, and our son Albert died of blood poisoning in Nov 1929. My husband, Frank, died in January 1955.
I married Herbert A. Berry in 1957 in the Los Angeles Temple for time. I have found strength in the sorrows I have experienced and happiness in the wealth of blessing given me. Our families have done many years of missionary work,
