John Lamar Whiting January 13, 1933 - May 5, 2008 John Lamar Whiting, age 75 passed peacefully away in his sleep in the early morning hours of May 5, 2008. John was born January 13, 1933 to Ralph E. and Nellie (Priestley) Whiting in Salt Lake City, UT. He spent his childhood in Holbrook, AZ and later moved to Kanab, UT where he graduated from high school and met his sweetheart Lois Chatterley. They were sealed in the St. George Temple on December 19, 1950 and spent 57 loving years together. For the first 13 years of their marriage John and Lois ran a dairy, a motel, and several of the Whiting Brothers gas stations. In 1963 John, his brothers and father bought a ranch in the Kannah Creek area where he raised his family, ranched and lived for 45 years. He loved to farm and cowboy in the early years but later turned over the duties of the ranch to his son Steve, so he could enjoy his other loves, running his heavy equipment ("playing in the dirt") and Politics. John LOVED politics, serving two terms as the Chairman for the Mesa County Republicans. He spent many hours making calls getting people to go out and vote. He served on the board of the Lands End Fire District, served lunch at the Catholic Outreach and attended the Mesa Co. Right to Life Candle light vigil for many years. He and his brother Rodney started the Hanging W Chuck wagon, they sang together for several summers entertaining the public. He was a truly gifted singer. John was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He served as bishop of the 2nd ward for 11 years. He helped remodel the "Old Gunnison Road Chapel". He held many callings, serving on the High council, as High Priest Group Leader and Stake Young Men's President. He held a special place in his heart for the Boy Scouting program where he spent many hours on various scouting trips. He gave of his time and assets freely and willingly for his church. John loved spending time with his family. He especially loved his grandchildren and loved to have them all at the house at the same time. He and Lois would sneak away from their family on Christmas Eve to deliver gifts and food to families that were in need. He truly cared for all people. He is survived by his wife Lois; five sons, J. Craig (LeAnn) of Spokane, WA; Ralph M. (Christine) of Orem, UT; Gary L. (Vicki) of Mesa, AZ; A. Gene (Lynette) of Kannah Creek; Steven (Julie) of Kannah Creek; two daughters, Selinda (Rick Landes) of Grand Junction; and Lisa of Kannah Creek; 37 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren; his brother Rodney (Donna) of Kannah Creek, currently serving a mission in Africa; and a sister Nellie (Jerry Lewis) of St. George, UT. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Lester and Donald, sister Catherine, grandson Brad and granddaughter Shelby. The family would like to extend a special thanks to dialysis nurses, Paige and Julie, who took such good care of our Dad. Visitation will take place Friday May 9, 2008 6 to 9:00 p.m. at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary. Funeral will be held May 10, 2008 at the Grand Junction Stake Center, 2881 Orchard Ave. at 9:00 a.m., with Bishop Dennis Forsgren officiating. Burial will follow at Orchard Mesa Municipal Cemetery.
