- Notes:
Hal Cox was born in Orangeville on October 25, 1898 to Sylvester Hulet and Mary Ellen Cox, the youngest of nine children. He attended Orangeville schools and Emery Stake Academy in Castle Dale. He and his brothers fixed up a school wagon with seats around it and a cover closed around the front, just leaving room for the driver to see out; the back end was open with steps to get in and out. Orangeville students paid to ride back and forth to the Academy-the first time there had ever been a school wagon from Orangeville to Castle Dale. They had the wagon full of students each day and to every activity. It was about 3 miles of travel on the trot-around 10-15 minutes. They earned enough to keep Hal and his brother, Elbert, in spending money, and everyone had a lot of fun besides.
Lucille was born 15 Oct 1903, in Castle Gate to Thomas T Lamph from Workington, England, and Sarah May Eden from Braidwood, Illinois Lucille, with her parents, 3 sisters and one brother, lived in California, Salt Lake, New Mexico, Kenilworth, Orangeville, Standardville, Wattis, and Rains, where her father was mine foreman and superintendent. She graduated from eighth grade in Cleveland with the second highest score in the county, and then attended Emery Stake Academy. She worked in the store in Rains and Standardville.
Hal and Lucille were married November 16, 1921. They have 7 children: Loriol, Arlene, Hallie, William, Marilyn, Ted, and Carren.
Hal worked at the coal mine in Standardville and Kenilworth. In 1923, he started farming in Orangeville, with 6 or 8 cows, a team, 75 acres of land with 47 acres of it for farming and some pasture. He worked at the sawmill for lumber to build their home. He quarried rocks from the fields around to build the foundation. He worked for the State road and Forest Service, and for his brother-in-law, Tom Lamph, as foreman on a pipe-laying project. He continued to raise bees and sell honey as his father had. He served as Bishop of the Orangeville Ward from 1938 to 1947; was on the high council for 10 years and is presently Patriarch. He has been Vice President of the Cottonwood Irrigation Company & Water Master of the canals.
Lucille was an excellent cook, always having food or something to give to every
one that came to their home. She sewed clothes for her children, kept them well dressed, and made many quilts. She has served as Counselor in the Ward and Stake Relief Society, Relief Society Teacher, and worked in the MIA, Primary, and 4H. She has been a member of the Ladies Improvement Club for many years. She assisted Hal in his Bishop's work, keeping the books and relaying messages to him in the days when they had only one ward clerk.
They have made a happy home for their children and given much service to the community.
