«u»«b»Fredrick Hyrum (Ted) Cox
«/u»«/b»Fredrick Hyrum (Ted) Cox son of F. Leslie Cox and Maria Huntsman Cox was born August 22, 1914 in Ferron, Utah. His father Les Cox was born in Ferron in 1887 to pioneer parents. Les was always interested in sports and could be depended upon to help with all community activity. He was a baseball coach for several years for such players as Carlyle Crawford, Clell Cox, Ross Petty and other members of the team. He was constructor of roads and bridges through out the state, a farmer and stockman. His mother Maria Huntsman Cox was born in Thurber (Bicknell) Wayne County. She with her family, the Hyrum Huntsman family, moved to Ferron in 1906. Ted's parents were married in 1909. He was their fourth child and first son.
It was from his mother that Ted learned to appreciate and love the town of Ferron. She always told her family that the best people in the world lived here. She was devoted to her church and served for many years as a Sunday School teacher and as Primary President from 1932 to 1934. She was an active civic worker in both Ferron and Emery County. She served on the Emery County Civilian Projects during World War II as well as the Red Cross. She loved her family (six children) and was an example to them in the compassion she showed for others.
During the summer of 1933 (Age 16), Ted started work with fathers construction company, Cox Construction. He built Ferron Reservoir, Wriggly Reservoir, worked many construction sites in Utah and Nevada, as well as helping to build the roads around Boulder (later Hoover ) Dam.
Ted was married to Wanda Worthen February 21, 1939. She was the daughter of Thomas and Lilly Worthen of Ferron. She died August 5, 1940 and their little son, Thomas Leslie died a few days later after complications of child birth.
Ted joined the Army Air Corps the shortly after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He was trained as a medic and served in various campaigns in the South Pacific including Guadalcanal, and Corregidor. He caught malaria when in the Pacific. In 1944, he returned to Wendover, Utah, and was there during the time that the crew for the Enola Gay was trained. Enola Gay was one of the planes that dropped the Atom Bomb on Japan. He seldom talked of his time of his life in the war because of the horrors that he experienced.
Ted was discharged from the Army after the war was over in 1945. He was hired as the Ranch Forman on the Monitor Valley Ranch, of which his father was a partner.
After a short courtship he married Luella Mable Ishmael in Reno on 14 November 1946. He adopted Anita Marguerite, Luella's daughter from a previous marriage.
A son, Ted G was born in Ely, Nevada in 1948. Later that year, the family moved back to Ferron, UT. He purchased a small farm and started a dairy. Over the next few years, his family grew: Rosemary, Elaine Maria, Timothy Fredrick, and Dan Edward were born. He attended Carbon College in Price, UT. He was active in the American Legion, and became president of the Dairyman's Association.
In 1960 he sold the dairy in Ferron, UT, and with his father, formed a partnership with Walter Kershaw to buy the Idaho Livestock Ranch in Challis, Idaho. The family moved to the Drake Ranch and he became the Forman of the ranch.
The partnership with Walter Kershaw soured in 1962 and he lost his share of the ranch and moved to Challis.
Ted leased a dairy just outside of Challis City Limits in 1963. He went fishing on the 4th of July 1963 and broke his leg. He was unable to work the remainder of the year of 1963. He developed a blood clot in his leg and this further disabled him. The family ran the dairy and sold raw milk to several people around town, while Ted worked for the Forest Service doing road construction.
The family moved to the big house behind the Chevron Service Station in 1964 at Challis and Ted was hired as the Town Marshal/ Chief of Police. Luella managed the Challis Cafe after Eric Malm, the previous owner, died.
Ted started working as the Challis Public Works Department in 1967 doing everything from upkeep on the water system and roads to digging graves at the cemetery.
In the fall of1971, He retired from his job for the City of Challis and in May of 1973 moved back to Ferron and into the Cox Family Home, the house of his birth. He took on a part time job as watermaster, He became involved in the master-gardener program. He became a member of the Ferron City Council. He was active in the American Legion and served as a Post Commander, State Commander, and then as the Area Commander. He attended several National Conventions in these capacities. He was on The Executive Board of South Eastern Utah for Community Action as The Representative of Emery County and was on The Board of Emery County Senior Citizen Committee.
Ted has worked successfully on many things and he has always excelled at telling stories.
He died of cancer at home in the same room as his birth on 10 April 1984.
