McKay was the son of Fred Cox Jewkes and Kirsten Elnore Christensen. (Family photo on right.) He married Carole Turnquist on 18 Dec 1953. .

"Mac" Jewkes was twenty-eight years old when his short life suddenly ended in the twisted wreckage of his patrol car. On June 28th, 1959, Mac was apparently attempting to stop a traffic violator when he entered the intersection of 6400 South State Street against the light and was involved in a collision with another vehicle. Deputy Jewkes was pinned in the wreckage for twenty-five minutes, but he had died instantly. The patrol car had travelled two hundred and six feet before coming to a stop.
Mac Jewkes has worked for the Sheriff's Office only five months. Deputy Sheriff McKay C. Jewkes left behind a young wife and a fifteen-month-old son.

Accidental: Multiple Vehicle Accident
Deputy Jewkes died in a traffic crash in Salt Lake County. The 28-year-old victim was driving a marked patrol unit northbound on State Street apparently in pursuit of a traffic violator. Witnesses reported that the patrol vehicle's emergency equipment was operating as it entered the intersection at 6400 South against a red light. A second vehicle traveling eastbound entered the intersection and collided with the patrol car before striking a third vehicle that burst into flames. The driver of the second vehicle was critically injured. Deputy Jewkes died instantly. The two-year veteran of law enforcement was married and the father of a son. He is buried in Elysian Burial Gardens, Salt Lake County. His bronze memorial plaque is sponsored by the citizens of Salt Lake County.
