Vocations: Cox, Frederick Walter (Male)Farmer-
Lumberman-County Treasurer-Legislature Member-
In 1870, Frederick lived in a household of 5 with a realwealth of $1500 and a personal wealth of $400.
Frederick was a prominent Elder in the Church.Frederick was the third son of a family of 12 children. His father died in 1830, so Frederick, being one of the older boys, tried hard to be a father to his younger brothers and sisters. Frederick was married to Emeline at the Hurbert home in Geauga County by the Prophet Joseph Smith. It is possible that he was converted to the Mormon Church by Isaac Morley.
Frederick was counselor to Isaac Morley, while in Lima, Adams co., Illinois. Frederick and his family were driven out of Lima, and fled to Nauvoo. Frederick married Jemima and Cordelia with President Brigham Young and Heber C. Kimball officiating. In Silver Creek, Pottawattamie, Iowa, Frederick worked to get teams, wagons and means to bring his large family on to Utah. While there he stood trial in 1851 on account of polygamy. They left Kanesville for Utah June 20, 1852.
In Manti, Frederick went to work to build forts, bridges, roads, homes, mills, etc., necessary for the making of a new country. He did much in developing this sterile State and in an ecclesiastical way he was a power. He was counselor to President Chapman, performed a successful mission of 27 months in England (1863), held the office of presiding High Priest and officiated in laying the northwest corner stone of the Manti Temple. He was also chosen to the Territorial legislature. He held the office of county treasurer for many years along with other offices of trust.
Frederick was a man of more than medium height and weight. He had brown hair, blue eyes, a mild and kind temperament and a loving disposition. He was a father in the community and everyone wished him near them in time of sickness or sorrow. There was something about Frederick that inspired one to better thoughts and better deeds. He seemed to read the countenance of people like an open book, and unless their lives were clean few came to trouble him. He was always able to look every one in the eye, speak his mind and give his advice and counsel which was sought in all the affairs of life. The poor and the downtrodden looked to him for comfort. Even the Indian found in him a true and lasting friend. Hours of patient conversation were spent with the Indians and the miracle was they never left him in anger. His talk to them was so forceful and the right so plainly pointed out that they were usually willing to follow his directions.
Frederick read things with so clear an eye and understood cause and effect so well that his word was almost prophetic. His sublime faith, his unfaltering integrity in all the walks of life made him a husband, a father, a friend, and a good citizen to be loved, honored and respected by all. His life was a success and the bond of affection which still continues unbroken among his descendants is one of the forceful evidences of his worth. All their highest ideals, their greatest achievements, their loyalty to the principles and faith of their fathers are tributes to his memory.

Copy of a letter written by F.W. Cox.
July 29, 1877 Sunday
Dear Francly, Libby,
I am about as usual. Just the same as far as I can tell. And do not like to write one better. But will try to write a few words to you away off there in Arizona. I have no news so I will tell what I have been doing. I have been working over the river about 6 months. Got the water over on the race track and I think its a good job. There can be much more done for somebody. I saw some, fix wagon some, and so on from one thing to another. I'm fixing up the harvester. We have 14 acres of volunteer wheat ready to cut and quite a heavy crop beside nearly ready. So much for that. I would like to see you but do not want you to leave your post for anything for there is where you are wanted and God will bless you day and night. Your letters make me glad. I like the spirit more than gold far better. = Attend to every duty never fear to try anything that should be done and you will learn of God and that is better than any other thing. This for Francly, Lily, and Charley and all that like it. God bless you. F W Cox Sen
