- Notes:
Your mother Jemima Cox was a woman that no one could say ought against. She was quiet, patient, forbearing, kind, and devoted to her children. Three years ago she was present with us. Tonight her chair is vacant. Her voice is lost in death.
She and I lived and ate together. We were driven from our home in the dead of winter among strangers. We had no friends to come and visit us. We felt that we were alone. We had no one but God to rely on. In Him we put our trust. When it was our bedtime, we knelt down in humble prayer, asking God to take us into his care and keeping through the night. We had six little children under six years of age without a father's care or protection. The finger of scorn was pointed at us. We were called Spiritual wives, looked upon as bad women. We bore it all with patience, looking forward to the time when we could live and enjoy the society of our husband and friends.
Your mother Jemima Cox lost two children--one a little girl seven years old died while your father was on his mission. She was named Carmelia. Your mother bore the cares of life with patience. When she was sick I was her nurse, and when I was sick she nursed me. Your mama Jemima Cox was born 30 September 1823, in Township of Zone, County of Kent, Canada. She has left us to struggle on a while longer. You girls, emulate her good works and prepare yourselves to meet and dwell with her.
