Mary [Ann] Darrow Richardson the daughter of Stephen and Harriet Burbank Darrow, was born February 28, 1818 in Hebron, New York. In 1840 she married Edmund Richardson and had Emma Lynette and George. In 1852 with her family, her mother, sister and a company of fellow Presbyterians she started over the Old Oregon Trail for Oregon. Continued and increasing trouble along the Trail forced the Richardsons to part with the rest of the Company and spend the winter in Utah.
They went toward the Mormons wondering of whom they were more afraid, the Mormons or the Indians, but before the winter was over they were baptized and gave up all thought of continuing on to Oregon. President Young sent them to Manti to help strengthen that new community in its early troublesome days. They took part in the life of the community and tried earnestly to be worthy Latter-day Saints.
In 1858 President Young divorced Mary [Ann] and Edmund Richardson and she was married to Fredrick Walter Cox. By him she had two sons, Charles Edmund born October 13, 1858 and Sullivan Calvin born January 26, 1861. These boys were raised as the sons of Edmund Richardson and carried his name all their long lives to their graves, though they knew he was their foster-father.
...Mary [Ann] Darrow Richardson was a fit companion for the other mothers of the children of Fredrick Walter Cox. All her life she was strong of mind and character, and when she came to know and understand the principles of the Gospel of Christ she embraced them as firmly and wholeheartedly as she had other strong principles. She did not hesitate to make of herself a living sacrifice that her sons might live. May her name be known and honored for her integrity to the end of time, and on into eternity.
===========================================
Among those who came to Manti during 1850 was the Richardson family. The father was Edmond, the mother was Mary Darrow and the children were Emma Lynette, born 1842 and George, born 1846. The Richardsons were Presbyterians. In their circle it was felt improper to have more than two children. By mutual agreement Edmond was rendered incapable of fathering any more children. Later, they left Washington County, New York and traveled toward Oregon Territory with fellow Presbyterians led by Reverend Whitworth. They met with many difficulties on the way. As they neared Utah they realized that they would have to part with the others and remain behind for a time. Mary' mother and sister were among the group who went on.
It was 1853 and the Walker War was on. As they came through the canyons they saw the bodies of some people who had been killed by the Indians. The stories that they had been told about Mormons were anything but good. They went toward Salt Lake Valley uncertain of whom they were more afraid, the Mormons or the Indians. They decided to camp close enough to the Mormons for protection from the Indians but far enough away that the Mormons would have no cause for irritation.
On Aug. 3rd 1953, they camped on the west side of Jordan River opposite Great Salt Lake City. They were greeted that evening by a young Mormon boy who brought a fresh pail of milk. He said that his mother had seen strangers camped there and thought that they might have need of it. The kindness was a great surprise to the Richardsons. They said to themselves, what we have been told about the Mormons must not be true. They investigated the Mormon teachings and were baptized on October 3rd. That December Brigham Young called them to go to Manti. They were in Manti during the season of the grasshoppers and other trials. They were faithful members of their newly chosen church. Edmond donated $168.00 to the permanent emigration fund. They did many other things.
Edmond and Mary were sealed as husband and wife for eternity on 20 April 1857. As they grew in their understanding of the religion they had embraced, the principal of eternal lives, etc., they were filled with remorse over the mistake that they had made in Edmond having become an eunuch.
Brigham Young visited Manti early in January 1858. He was welcomed by the band assembled at Temple Hill and a large crowd at the council house. Edmond and Mary Richardson asked Brigham Young for a blessing that they might have more children. He considered their case and asked them to meet with him on the morrow.
Edmond and Mary prayed earnestly about it and that night each of them had a vision. When they met with Brigham Young again, he presented them with a paper containing the names of three worthy polygamist men.
He told Edmond and Mary to choose one of the three to father some children for them. They choose the name of Frederick Walter Cox. There was some hesitation on the part of F. Walter Cox to fill the request. Family story was that Brigham Young used strong persuasion on Walter Cox. Because he was the only one who could do it, Brigham Young gave a temporary separation to Edmond and Mary. He then performed a civil marriage uniting Walter Cox and Mary Richardson. The date was January 9, 1858. (Record on file in the archives of Salt Lake City) Edmond went away to work but he sent alimony to Mary. She continued to live at the Richardson home. It was agreed that any children born to Mary would carry the Richardson name.
