- Notes:
Velma was born August 16, 1910 in Ferron to Leslie Cox and Maria Huntsman Cox. Les was a farmer, stockman and contractor of roads. Maria lived in Ferron throughout her married life. She lived just across the street from the Petersen family and few were the days that they didn't spend time with each other. Velma remembers the wonderful privilege of having her sons enjoy such a relationship with a Grandmother.
Kermit and Velma were married in 1934. They lived in Wellington for 12 years farming and working in Carbon County Coal Mines. When the chance came to move back to Ferron they took it.
Kermit was one of the first to operate a Grade A Dairy, selling to Hiland Dairy Association. He ran beef cows on Range Creek near Horse Canyon in Carbon County in the summer and on Salt Wash area of the San Rafael in winter.
Kermit always said he would have preferred to drive a greyhound bus, but he became one of the better farmers in Emery County. He instilled a love for the land in his sons, however, as all three came back to the county when the opportunity developed.
He developed a real love for the San Rafael Desert Country. After he sold his cows and retired from the farm he spent many days in his truck and on a horse just exploring. He became one of the chief sidewalk superintendents on the 1-70 construction project, especially the Eagle Canyon Bridge. He would check on their progress at least once a week to make sure they did as little damage as possible to the beauty of the area and to watch the engineering techniques which could conquer such a desolate land.
Velma taught elementary school most of her life, in Castle Dale and Ferron before marriage, in Wellington as a young married woman and in Ferron for a total of 29 years until she retired in 1973.
She was able to instill the desire for knowledge in her own family and help in several generations of young students. She taught many children to read even after they had decided they would never make it.
Kermit and Velma raised three sons, Kent Don and Michael. They all moved from Ferron to obtain education and later jobs, but have all returned as opportunities have developed in Emery County
Kermit loved to travel and often talked Velma into taking long trips. They made several trips across the country. One of the most memorable ones was to Ohio in 1955 when their oldest son, Kent, was in the Army and had been transferred. His wife was pregnant and needed help getting home to Utah. What fun they had towing a 1948 Studebaker home and teaching Velma (Who is afraid of heights) to drive and tow over the Rocky Mountains.
Moved from Ferron, UT to Wellington, Carbon, UT on 26 JUN 1934 (0025954 Ferron UT Ward Records #454)
