- Notes:
George Albert Huntsman, a farmer and sheep herder, was born 20 November 1880 at Hebron, Utah. His parents were Hyrum Ralston Huntsman Sr. and Emeline Hunt, who lived in Ferron also. He was the 7th of their 10 children. His brothers and sisters were: Hyrum Ralston Jr., James William, Amos Pratt, Edwin, Edward, Emeline Sovina (Vina), Nancy Jane, Charles Arthur and Mary (Mae) Elva.
He married Deborah (Deby) Louisa Cox 26 July 1906. She was born 7 March 1885 at Ferron, Utah. Her parents were Fred rick Walter Cox lil and Mariah Louisa Stevens, who lived in Ferron also. She was the oldest of 5 children. Her brothers were Fredrick Leslie, Clell Hyrum, Ross W., and Lloyd Glenn.
George and Deby had three children: Cleon, born 22 March 1910; Naone, born 23 July 1915; and Nila, born 17 June 1924.
George always said he was a man without a town. He lived in the following towns that no longer exist: Hebron, Thurber, Masa, Cainesville, Quitchenpaw, and Rochester. He graduated from Snow Academy, now Snow College. He taught school at Cainesville, Quitchenpaw (Emery) and the Emery County Academy for awhile. In Thurber his first school years were spent in a one-room log school house.
George bought a farm at Rochester (Moore) and worked on the canal for G. W. Lang. He and Gene Minchey bought one of the first hay balers in the country. He was baling hay on the tithing lot (Clifton Nelson home) and got his hand badly mashed in the baler. Deby Cox was watching; she lived close by. He had to see the Doctor every day. It was too far to travel with horse and buggy, so he got to stay at the Fredrick Walter Cox home (Lloyd Cox home) . Here he met his wife. They lived in Rochester and worked for G. W. Lang and later for L. C. Moore, for whom the town was later named. Eventually they moved to Ferron. Travel was with horses and wagon.
Through the years he chopped off a toe and had typhoid fever. He was active in church and civic affairs such as: Ferron Town Treasurer for 19 years at his home, LDS Ward Clerk (last time at 83 years of age), Secretary of Ferron Canal and Reservoir Company, Stake Secretary High Priest Quorum, Water Master, and many more. He died 7 July 1967 at Ferron's Emery County Nursing Home. At that time he was the oldest man in Ferron.
They enjoyed 60 years of married life, and they celebrated their Golden Wedding 26 July 1956 with a party given by their children.
They lived during the Depression and were always in stressed circumstances, having been raised poor financially. When Deby was 18 years old her mother died. Deby helped raise her brothers, including Lloyd, her 6-day old baby brother. It was her hobby to keep all the important dates of Ferron Ward and Town; also her wedding cake.
Deby was a great seamstress since she was 15 years old; she sewed for lots of townspeople. Once she made a lady's suit from a man's suit. One summer she pieced and made 16 quilts. She became seamstress for the CCC Camp, which was over the fence from her in the City Park. The boys all wanted bell-bottom trousers. They were always invited to her home; they called her dinners, "7-dessert dinners." The boys weren't allowed cars at camp. So at one time Deby had 16 cars parked in her yard. Among the teenagers she was noted for her mustard pickles, and she loved the music and fun they created in her home. She "chorded" on the piano, played the Hawaiian steel guitar and harmonica. Deby was a member of the Ferron Harmonica Band, along with her daughter Naone, who played the ukulele. Deby, with Nila as assistant, has wallpapered most every home in Ferron, for $1.00 a day; later 20a roll. On a WPA project she instructed people to make mattresses, and she made two for herself.
Deby was reporter to the Emery County Progress for 15 years. She was secretary to the Red Cross during WW l; worked in DUP and on the "Old Folks' Committee." She was active in church work from the time she was 13 years old. She always had several jobs at a time in church and civic affairs, such as: Secretary of Relief Society (21 years); Secretary to Ward and Stake Sunday School; Counselor YLMIA; President of Relief Society; Secretary in Genealogy, Primary and LDS girls' organization; teacher of many classes, including Primary; and Historian. Deby was Ward Budget Secretary, which included taking tickets at the Ward picture shows at the Church four nights a week for 10 years. George and Deby were janitors of the Church. Deby, at age 78, was Secretary of the Sunday School for 2 years.
She died 29 April 1974 at Ferron's Emery County Nursing Home. BY NILA H. MUMM
