His paternal grandparents Chris and Margaret Petersen became converts to the Mormon church in Denmark and emigrated to Utah in 1877. His maternal great-great grandfather Fredrick Walter Cox I was with the Prophet Joseph Smith in Nauvoo. He was in charge of 100 wagons as the mormons crossed the plains. He was called to Manti to help build the Manti Temple.
Don lived in Carbon County the first seven years of his life. His father (Kermit) was a dairy farmer and had a farm on Miller Creek. His mother (Velma) was a schoolteacher et Wellington Elementary and Junior High. He attended school there until last of second grade when the family moved to Ferron. He finished his public schooling in Ferron and then received a degree in carpentry and welding at C.E.U. in Price in 1958.
Colleen was born October 16, 1943 in Murray, Utah. She is the daughter of Bacil and Weltha Keele, Roosevelt, Utah. She has one sister and two brothers all living in the Uintah Basin area. Colleen attended school at Bingham, Utah where her father worked for Kennecott Copper Company.
Her father was in the army all during World War II stationed in the South Pacific and Japan.
Colleen was a senior in high school when her family moved to Challis, Idaho. It was here that she met her husband Don. He was working for his grandfather Les Cox on a cattle ranch near Challis.
Don and Colleen were married August 9, 1960. They stayed in Challis until February of 1961. They then moved to Ferron and Don worked with his father farming and in the dairy.
Their first child Todd was born July 10, 1961. Their second son Kim was born November 22, 1963.
They continued to live in Ferron until February of 1965 when they decided to move to Alaska where they planned to get rich quick and bring back a truck load of gold. Like many dreams of adventure this one failed to materialize. They were happy to return to continental U.S. in June that year.
At that time Ralph Lockyear of Longview, Washington gave Don a job as superintendent of bridge construction which lasted for eight years. The longest bridge was in Washington, city of Woodland where the family lived. It was 1800 feet long and spanned the river where the Lewis meets the Columbia.
Their first daughter, ElDawna was born during this time on July 26, 1968.
Don and Colleen moved back to Ferron January 8,1974 to help his parents because of cancer surgery for his father. They have lived here since and plan to make this their permanent home.
Both Don and Colleen work for. Emery Mining Corporation. Don is company carpenter and Colleen does office work at the Des-Bee Mine.
They own a farm south of Ferron where they spend most of their spare time raising horses and other animals.
