DEAN SCHANK Dean Ray Schank, 72, loving husband, father and grandfather, returned to his heavenly home Thursday, Jan, 12, 2012. Dean was born in Fallon, Oct. 10, 1939, to Leroy Christian Schank and Prudence Verona Cox, the youngest of four children. He was a devoted lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he served in various capacities throughout his life, including as a full-time missionary in the U.S. Central States mission. Dean attended the University of Nevada-Reno and Utah State University, studying vocational agriculture. While at UNR, he participated in the sport of boxing and was a drum major for the marching band. Aug. 18, 1962, Dean married Patricia Schofield in the Manti LDS temple, raising five children. After a 1987 divorce, he married Karen Bingham in the St. George temple May 28, 1988, and raised an additional five children. Dean worked for several years as the Nevada Cooperative Extension service as director of the 4-H program. He worked nearly 25 years for the City of Las Vegas Recreation department as director of Youth Affairs, where he was instrumental in the creation and success of city programs such as the Las Vegas Youth Fair, the Las Vegas Youth Council, the Las Vegas Zoo, and the Las Vegas Corporate Challenge. Dean was an avid photographer, taking pictures and creating multimedia slideshows for numerous city-sponsored events. He enjoyed running, bicycling, small boat sailing, and scouting. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Cyril and Stanley; and by granddaughter, Stephanie Schank. Dean is survived by his wife, Karen; his sister, Rose Marie (Duane) Hatch; and his children, Deanna (Jeff) Matthews, Michael (Marisel) Schank, Stephen (Lynn) Schank, Christian (Candice) Schank, Erika (Nicholas) Layland, Emily Schank, Katherine Schank, Jonathan Schank, Benjamin Schank, and Elizabeth Schank. He leaves behind 23 grandchildren. Online condolences can be sent to «u»www.davisfuneralservices.com «/u» Public viewing will be 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, at Davis Funeral Home, 2127 W. Charleston Blvd. in Las Vegas. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, at the LDS Chapel, 4525 N. Rainbow Blvd., in Las Vegas. Interment to follow
